A Ram (random access memory) is the main memory of a PC which executes each and every processes performed on a computer system. More Ram storage means more run time speed, the Ram is the only memory which takes load of all the executed applications, music files, games...etc. When trying to execute two or more apps on a low Ram will lead to errors like "application not responding" thus, the Paging and cache memory is lesser than apps requirements. Upgrading your PC's Ram is easier said than done, and to add to it, it's mostly costly unless you are planning to get a used one.
Not to worry, you can still enjoy your PC by using a Virtual Memory for the time being before saving up and getting a more powerful Ram.
You can increase your Ram just by using any device (External Hard drive or pen drives) as a Virtual Ram. This virtual Ram cannot replace an actual Ram, a Ram's performance cannot be compared to that of any device used as a Virtual Ram storage. The concept of a Virtual Ram is to increase Paging memory and some other functions which will then increase overall performance of your PC and the issue of "application not responding" will be fixed.
How To Use Pendrive As Ram
Method 1:- Virtual Ram tutorial For Windows XP, 7 and 8
- First of all plug in your Pen Drive to your PC.
- Then open “My computer” and Right click on an empty space >> Then click on “Properties”.
- In Properties window, click on “Advanced system settings” from left side.

- A new window will appear again then click on “Advanced” Tab.
- In the Advanced Tab there is an option of “Virtual Memory box”, click on the “Change button”.
- After clicking on the "Change button" “Virtual settings” will pop-up.
- Now uncheck “Automatically Manage Page size feature”.
- Then in Custom size input the exact storage size of your Pen drive into the first box.
Note:- If Your Pen Drive is 4Gb in size then always add 10Mb less from current available size. just how i used a pen drive of size 4Gb and current space available is 3700 Mb i then then used approx 3690 minimum or reduce it a little bit more to ensure the device's safety.
- Now input the same “Value” in both boxes above then click on Apply.
- Restart Your PC or Laptop and the pen drive will start working as a “Virtual Ram”.
Important Note:- If you face any problem in above method you can also follow method below which is easier to setup and works on Windows 7, 8 and 10
Method 2:- Increase Ram Using ReadyBoost In Windows 7, 8and 10
- First of all Insert your “Pen Drive”
- Now Right click on the Pen drive.
- Click on “Properties”
- Then click on the “ReadyBoost” Tab.
- Now switch to “Use this device” and reduce your current memory space. If your current device space is 3700MB then reduce it to approx 200-300MB.
- Click on Apply and we are Done!
In case if you want to change your pen drive to its normal state then switch back to "Don’t use device" in Readyboost tab.
Important Notes:-
Always Safely Eject Your Pen Drive. Direct removal may lead to device damage.
In the first method., If you want to convert your Pen drive back to Normal. Then once Again open Virtual Settings And Remove the custom memory value added and choose Default settings by checking “Automatically Manage Paging Size”.
In the second method don’t forget to revert back to normal or otherwise open your pen drive and delete Readyboost file from your pen drive.
